Commission gets tough with member states and their railways
After a long period of study the European Commission finally launched infraction proceedings against all member states

Network Rail recognises the need to plan for growth – when will the Government do so?
RFG welcomes the announcement by Network Rail (24 June 2008) that it plans to investigate five or six routes for high speed lines or other means of increasing capacity on the network.

ORR Supports freight growth
RFG welcomes the outcome of the Office of Rail Regulation’s (ORR’s) Draft Determination of Network Rail’s revenue requirements and access charges for the period from 2009 to 2014 published yesterday (5 June).

RFG Welcomes Lords Committee Report on Crossrail Bill
RFG today welcomed the publication of the Report by the House of Lords Select Committee on the Crossrail Bill, in which the Committee ‘recognised the importance of rail freight to the UK economy’ and were ‘grateful to the freight Petitioners for organising themselves and presenting their cases efficiently and clearly.’

7 day railway - correspondence with Network Rail
RFG is concerned with the impact 7 Day Railway has on freight operators and has sent a letter to Network Rail to express our concerns

RFG Welcomes new EC State Aids guidlines published on 30 April.
The purpose of the document is to provide clear guidance on how and in what circumstances state aids may be paid to railways undertakings. It replaces very ambiguous ‘custom and practice’ applied with varying degrees of effectiveness.

Another West Coast Main Line failure!
RFG today (3rd May) expressed its strong disappointment at ORR’s decision to allow Network Rail to close the West Coast Main Line for longer and more frequent periods than were planned last year, in order to complete the planned route upgrade by December 2008.

Gwyneth Dunwoody MP
Gwyneth’s sad death on Thursday 17th April 2008 has robbed transport of a great friend and supporter, not only in her capacity as chairman of the Commons Transport Committee but also because of her common-sense approach to those who tried to pull the wool over her eyes, be they government, industry or the public.

Strategic Freight Network comes alive!
RFG today (4 April 2008) welcomes publication of Network Rail’s Strategic Freight Network (SFN) paper which sets out industry plans for creating the SFN proposed in the Department for Transport’s July 2007 White Paper.

RFG News 74 April 2008 published today!
RFG News 74 leads with a new daily Tilbury – Daventry services for the wine trade operated by J F Hillbrand. This issue also lists several other new flows, both within the UK and through the Channel Tunnel. Much of the issue is devoted to the ongoing problems of the West Coast Main Line and other routes
