Low Carbon Fuels Strategy

Rail Freight Group (RFG) was pleased to respond to the DfT Call for Ideas on a Low Carbon Fuels Strategy.  Rail freight is acknowledged for its superior environmental performance to road freight, emitting only one quarter of the carbon emissions of HGV. Modal shift to rail freight is vitally important to reduce the carbon footprint of freight transport now, even ahead of alternative technologies being developed.  Government has committed to rail freight growth, supporting modal shift, in its Transport Decarbonisation Plan and in its plans for rail reform

However, like all sectors of the economy, rail freight must reduce its own emissions further, and meet the statutory requirements for net zero in 2050. Rail freight must also meet the Government target to remove all diesel only traction from the railways by 2040, 2035 in Scotland.
