Results from the RSSB T1187 project Fleet-Wide Assessment of Rail Emission Factors have now been published.
Environmental consultants Aether Limited will discuss key findings from this work, which was based on key data provided by multiple FOCs. Newly developed emission factors provide a better representation of how air pollutant emissions vary according to engine operating condition and will help better understand rail freight’s impact on air quality in local areas, such as around urban rail freight yards.
The impact of delays and longer trains on emissions can now be quantified, which can help support investment cases.
In addition, the new approach allows derivation of more accurate g/tonne-km emission factors for specific freight trips that can enable more meaningful intermodal comparisons.
