Innovation in rail freight – a potential funding mechanism

3 August 2020 11.30am | Members-only Webinar

We are pleased to host a members-only webinar looking at financial support for innovation in rail freight and sharing the results of some funded projects which may have wide application within the sector.

Kelvin Davies, Innovation Lead Rail, InnovateUK will explain his role in supporting innovation. Kelvin will be joined by two successful recipients of funding who will share what they have learnt – Chris Land-Jones, Strategic Programmes Manager, Perpetuum Ltd, on wheelset and in-service axle monitoring and John Cooke, Director of CoCatalyst Ltd on improving railway operations through train-mounted water addition.

Kelvin’s role includes supporting the DfT’s rail innovation programme, Network Rail’s CP6 R&D programme, and supporting the rail industry across a broad range of topics including the freight sector. Kelvin will introduce InnovateUK, highlight opportunities for funding innovation in rail freight, and illustrate a number of case studies of successful projects delivering benefits to the industry.

Chris Land-Jones, Strategic Programmes Manager, Perpetuum Ltd
• An introduction to Perpetuum Ltd
• FOAK3 project with DRS on wireless locomotive wheelset monitoring
– new sensor and application to Class66 Locomotives
• FOAK TAMON (Train Axle Monitoring) project on in-service axle monitoring and load monitoring
– new analytics and application to Class802/01 IET

John Cooke of CoCatalyst Ltd will describe how FOAK funding has supported the development of Water-Trak, a novel solution to low adhesion. He will explain how adding water to the wheel rail interface can surprisingly improve traction and braking. John will also discuss how the cleaning effect Water-Trak delivers might be used to optimise rail operations both for passenger and freight services.
