Rail Freight Group (RFG) is pleased to respond to the consultation on the East West Rail Central Section.
RFG recognises that a final decision has not yet been taken by East West Rail Co and DfT regarding the use of the route for freight traffic. Nonetheless, it is imperative that the design of the route is capable of supporting commercial freight services, and that decisions are not taken at this stage which would preclude the use of the route by freight services. This includes both the design of the central section, and also capacity decisions on parts of the existing network where freight might or indeed does operate.
The route has the potential to support commercial rail freight services including cross country intermodal services from Port of Felixstowe and construction trains which could deliver materials for the significant infrastructure development expected across the Oxford – Cambridge arc.
